Communications Management

Here’s a project management principle: 90% of project manager’s time is spent communicating. Consider all of the project team members, management, other project managers, vendors, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders the project manager has to communicate with in order for the project to be successful. The project management plan defines who needs what information, when do they need it, and in what modality. Part of the communications management plan is a schedule of expected communication types such as reports, interviews, and scheduled meetings.

The project manager will also need to identify stakeholders to make certain that proper communications flow to the correct people. The distribution of the project information will follow the communications plan, the preference of the project stakeholders, and the needs and conditions within the project. This is project reporting.
