PMP Basics

Let’s be perfectly honest: projects are about getting things done. Accomplishment. Doing. Action. Getting from here to there. Projects are about cutting costs, increasing revenue, and, to some extent, running a little business to create something, change something, or get rid of something. Projects are about change – that’s right, change. You’re changing the world, your organization, or community by adding a new product or service. Or maybe things are changed by moving, adding, or deleting something.

Your mission, to pass the PMP certification exam, is not unlike a project. You’ve already initiated the project, planned your study attack, and now you’re into executing, monitoring and controlling, and working towards the closure of this project by passing the PMP exam. This first module of our free online PMP exam prep will help you establish good fundamentals of project management.

The link to Detailing the PMBOK Guide is broken.

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for the videos! It seems that the first link, “Detailing the PMBOK Guide”, does not seem to be functional. Let me know how I can view it. I would greatly appreciate it. I’ve listed the link below.

By the way, would it be possible to post PDF versions of all your slides so that it would be easier to make notes when watching the videos? They also be great to have for review and final study of the entire course .

Again, thanks for this wonderful gesture!!

Steven

Dear Joseph,
could you please help to FIX the link for the “PMP Basics-Detailing the PMBOK Guide” video file as it’s getting “You 404’d it. Gnarly, dude.” because of wrong pointer to the file.
Existing link is {broken} and the link needs correction as,
http://www.instructing.com/pmpcourse/mod1_session1/player.html

BTW, is it possible to access the files offline, I would very much appreciate if you could help.
thanks a million in advance,
warmest regards,
FP

Thanks for the heads-up on the video link! I’ve corrected the link and it’s working now.

I’m afraid this course is only available online. We’ve some things in the works for a course workbook in PDF format. Great minds think alike!

Thanks again,

Joseph

Thanks! I’ve fixed the link – appreciate the heads-up and comment!

Hi Joseph,

For some reason, I cannot enter an answer for the second question of the Session Quiz in the First Module, “Detailing the PMBOK Guide”. This also means that I cannot proceed with the rest of the quiz. I have detailed the link below. Let me know how to proceed.

Thank you,
Steven

Passed the PMP today,
I think the Cheat Sheet downloads had a lot to do with it. Really helped focus in on what I had to memorize. Though I purchased the Cheat Sheet and Slide Deck with Notes, It was hard to not just watch the Video’s live, over and over, while I was studying. Wish I did not purchase the prep-course from someone else first. Anyway, might consider a ipod version of your slides and I think I could have gotten as much from just listening to you explain the concepts on my ipod.
THANKS

Rork – thanks for the comment and CONGRATS on passing your PMP exam! I’m so glad the content here and the PMP Exam Prep helped, but you did all the hard work.

I have recently, as you suggested, made my lectures available in MP3 format as part of my PMP Prep Kit.

Thanks again – and best in your career.

Hi,

Feasibility study will come in project charter?Pls confirm

Joseph Phillips June 1, 2010 at 12:14 pm

Sattanathan – thanks for your query. According to the PMBOK, section 4.1.1.2 it’s the business case that’s used as an input to develop the project charter. The PMBOK tells us “the business case or similar document provides the necessary information…” So it’s possible, but probably not the best solution, to use a feasibility study as an input for the project charter. thanks!

Your videos are the best … I have bought a few course materials but never got motivated to complete them. However, your slides/lectures are very interesting and I am sure will help me take the exam. However, I was wondering how and when will I get the 35 hours credit for the coursework?
Thanks!

Joseph Phillips October 20, 2010 at 3:16 pm

PMI requires that web-based courses include an end-of course exam to test the information learned. Our PMP Prep Kit includes the end-of-course exam needed to qualify for the PMI 35 contact hours of education. You can find complete details and purchase the kit here: http://instructing.com/pmp-prep-kit/

Thanks!

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this training material. Unlike the PMBOK, this is not boring and i am effectively able to learn the material.
